Why your Leadership Style matters. 3 Areas Leaders Must Examine to be Effective.

or Read.

Just as different industries are known for particular leadership styles, so too different personalities are drawn to particular leadership styles. the important thing is to understand what is going to be most effective rather than what you believe is the “right” way. The following three areas must be examined if you want to be an effective leader.

1. Your motives.

2. The purpose of your position.

3. The impact on those you lead.

Book mentioned is “Leaders Eat Last” by Simon Sinek

Word mentioned is “Testiculating” – When a man talks bollocks!

From my notes, some of which did not get mentioned:

Leadership styles often have different names.

Autocratic Command and Control, transformational, democratic, laissez-faire, SERVANT.

Your personality default is drawn to a style.

Nursing sister – dragon lady – no idea what she was doing was bullying.

A symptom of poor leadership is high turnover.

These days another symptom is blaming Covid for people not returning.

“Because I said so” is the lowest form of leadership. If you have to assert your authority, you don’t have any”. Ps Ric Brewer

3 areas to examine:

  1. Your motives – Know your default and adapt it. Is it to get people to do what you want? What’s in it for you if they do? Do you enjoy the prestige and the perks?

“All the perks, all the benefits and advantages you may get for the rank or position you hold, they aren’t meant for you. They are meant for the role you fill.” Leaders Eat Last – Simon Sinek

  1. The purpose of your position – Knowing you WHY answers most of your decisions. Communicating that WHY to your team helps gives meaning to their processes and enables them to contribute suggestions.

“Because I said so” only demeans you. “Because GOD said so” just makes you look like a manipulative cult leader.

Jesus said “Jesus called them together and said in Matthew 20 “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Ps Mark Ramsey – “It’s not about me, it’s about the vision. I want this place to be able to run whether I’m here or not”. He empowered his team.

  1. The impact on those you lead. Notice it. Care about it. Ask how people are going. Ask for their input. Listen to them. Thank them.

When you are not honest with yourself, you may not notice but others do. It means your grand speeches or preaches sound good to you, but your audience, your congregation, your family – will know you are just TESTICULATING again.
